Complex welded part for construction machinery

We have cooperated with German-Swiss multinational equipment manufacturer for more than 20 years. The latest project was to provide a clamping fixture for the assembly of complex welded parts for construction machinery. In SMM, we developed and manufactured fixtures for the assembly, welding, handling and machining of assemblies for their construction machinery.

Steel rings for the automotive industry

We work for one of the most successful Slovenian family companies and a leading manufacturer of elements for the automotive industry based on steel rings, as well as various other rings, dental rings etc. They have a majority stake in the world market in the production of these elements.

With their knowledge of technology and processes, we prepare solutions and manufacture production equipment for the manufacture of steel rings.

For our cooperation, on the 45th anniversary of the company, we received recognition for development.

Development of reconfigurable robotic cells, Robkoncel

The main objective of the ROBKONCEL project was to develop an integrated system for total quality control in production with a reconfigurable robotic cell and an intelligent process monitoring system.

Our company participated in the project as lead partner. The project was co-funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
In the case of two of the project partners, Gorenje and Unior, reconfigurable robot cells for product inspection have been developed. The cells are equipped with a robotic arm, machine vision systems and additional sensors depending on the product and the test the cells are performing. Using a combination of advanced artificial intelligence techniques, products are inspected for potential functional, dimensional, and mechanical defects.
In the case of the Gorenje project partner, images obtained using 2D machine vision system were used to analyse the visual defects on the faceplate and inside of the oven. In the case of project partner Unior, 3D point clouds obtained using a 3D machine vision system are used to analyse visual and dimensional defects and mechanical damage on machined forgings.
In the case of product/process quality control, time series analysis of the lathe main spindle vibration signals generated during the machining process is also used. The aim of this analysis was to determine the optimum changeover time of the cutting tool on the lathe.

As part of the ROBKONCEL project, a digital twin of the reconfigurable robotic cell was developed in collaboration with the Laboratory for Robotisation of the University of Maribor.

Mould Storage

The automated storage of vulcanisation tools.

Cardboard Pallets Line

We have developed a production line for cardboard pallets for a start-up company.

The company has the vision to become a global licensor for the development of production lines for cardboard pallets. One production line has been developed for the Austrian market and another for Saudi Arabia.
The products have been awarded by the EU for their quality and sustainability. So they are perfect alternatives to wood, composite, plastic and all other pallets currently on the market.

Being ultra-light, there pallets combine all the important cost-saving advantages with the normal strength and durability of traditional solutions.

APEX, automotive tyre production lines

We have developed and regularly supply APEX semi-production chipper and flipper lines for the production of automotive tyres, where all stages of tyre production are carried out, with vulcanisation as the final processing step.

These are very complex lines, combining elements of machine construction, electronics, robotics, control, precise parameter control, the storage of production parameters on a server, and linking the production line to the company's IT system for production start-up.
We are currently in the process of developing a state-of-the-art tyre quality analysis system based on the analysis of the parameters of the individual layers in the tyre assembly process. Using 3D machine vision systems, we can digitise the surface geometry of the raw tyre at each stage of the assembly process. The digitised surface geometry is a point cloud (or 3D image) created by scanning the actual surface. By analysing the 3D images of the surface, the correctness of the fitting and the quality of the joins can be assessed.

The implementation of such a system allows for the more efficient use of materials, increased productivity and operator independence.

Heavy hydraulic presses up to 2,000 tonnes for the production of truck cabins for a Belorussian customer in cooperation with Riko

At SMM, we have designed, developed and implemented heavy-duty hydraulic presses with a force of up to 2,000 tonnes.

We have developed the press design, hydraulics, computer control, PLC control and data acquisition of the press operation using various sensors.
The entire system was further enhanced by the processing of the machine's operating data, which is stored on a server. The data can then be processed and analysed on the server and the performance of the baler can be monitored. The press was sold by RIKO to Russia.

We have used modern technological solutions from the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and edge computing to develop the machine in line with the European guidelines for Industry 4.0.

Robotic cells for the manipulation of construction products

We have developed robotic cells for the manipulation of building products.
In addition to the conventional direct programming approach, we also used an indirect programming procedure to programme the robots, which significantly reduced the start-up time of the cells. In this way, we have complemented the current practice of direct robot programming with programming in a virtual environment, which contributes to the digital transformation of the robot programming process.

In addition, we used a 2D machine vision system to identify defective products, which had the effect of reducing the number of bad products ending up with the customer.

We used well-known computer vision and machine learning methods to analyse the images and distinguish between good and bad products.

OTR drum

OTR – "off the road" drum for making large tyres for tractors and work vehicles. It is unique in the world in that it has automatic width adjustment.

Machine data capture system

For a production plant, we implemented a system to capture and process data and machine control units (PLCs) and integrate this data into the IT systems of companies of different tire production multinationals and other production companies.

This has provided us with knowledge that we have incorporated into other projects and we have developed similar systems for a Slovenian company, which manufactures special machines for the production of electronic components.
The data on the server is available for analysing what is happening on the machine and for detecting potential faults.

L'MIS Software

SMM d.o.o. has developed a business information system – L'MIS – for the comprehensive management of all aspects of business in the following areas: development, marketing, production, warehousing, human resources, accounting and finance.

Compared to other foreign software systems – SAP, BaaN, iMAN, Matrix – it is specially adapted to the needs of design companies. The system has been awarded several times and is also suitable for working with multinationals (e.g. GE Global eXchange Service e-business system).

Integrating artificial vision into an information system for control and integrated process management

The project investigated the potential of artificial vision in the control and overall management of processes in the production of automotive tyres. We were the first system to introduce barcodes and barcode recognition throughout the production process, enabling the full traceability of materials and processes in tire production multinational.
